Effect of Silymarin on Golgi Protein 73 level in Iraqi Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Author: INAM SAMEH ARIF
Abstract: Aim of study: To evaluate the effect of silymarin (legalon) on the level of Golgi Protein GP73 in patients with liver cirrhosis in different stages. Material and Methods: thirty patients with liver cirrhosis were enrolled in the current study with age range (44 - 67 year). For comparisons, 30 control subjects comparable to liver cirrhosis patients in respect to age (40-67 year), were included in the study. After that, the patients were divided according to the severity of the disease by adopting the Child-Pugh score into three groups : group A (score A treated with silymarin 420 mg/day) , group B (score B treated with Silymarin and diuretics) and C group (score C treated with Silymarin , diuretics and intravenous albumin) . Serum Golgi protein 73 , liver function tests, platelets account, PT,PTT, INR, total protein , albumin and globulin were measured. Results: The mean of serum GP73 levels shown highly signeficant diffrance in Total patients (In all groups ) (57.09 ± 19.92 ng/ml) when compared to control group(22.51± 6.27 ng/ml). There was a significant difference when compare between control and each of patients subgroups(A, B and C ). There was a significant difference between group A and both group B and C . as well as, there was a significant difference when compare between Group B and C. Conclusion: Serum GP73 level is a novel noninvasive biomarker to reflect moderate to severe liver cirrhosis; meanwhile; silymarin may decrease the rate of development to advanced stage of the disease.
