Prevalence of Premenstrual Symptoms and Coping Behaviour among Malaysian University Students

Abstract: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the name given to a collection of physical, psychological and behavioral symptoms that some women experience during the late luteal phase of each menstrual cycle (7-14 days prior to menstruation). Symptoms seem to worsen as menstruation approaches and subside at the onset or after several days of menstruation on that cycle of menstruations. Women adopt different method to cope up their problems especially when they are having menstrual cycle. Objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of the premenstrual symptoms and coping behaviour among MBBS students in University.Female students was chosen following the systematic random sampling. Total number of the student were chosen from age 20-30 years from MBBS course. Cross-sectional study was conducted among systematically selected female students of University. A structured and pretested self-administered questionnaire were employed for data collection. A set of questionnaires were tested on female students on type of premenstrual symptoms they usually having during menstrual cycle and their coping behavior. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, SPSS (SPSS version 19). Based on result of the study it’s found that majority of students are using healthy strategy by do not blame themselves in having PMS and they accepted PMS as their natural process as nothing can be done and try to cope up in healthy way.
