Abstract: Bakcground: Periodontal disease is a chronic infectious disease of the tooth supporting tissue that commonly occurs in humans and caused by bacteria that adhere to and grow on the surface of the teeth. Periodontal disease can be treated through non-surgical therapy as well as surgical therapy. Both supragingival and subgingival plaque and calculus clearance should be performed as an initial stage of the treatment of periodontal disease. Sea cucumber extract has been shown to have antimicrobial, anticoagulant and antithrombotic effects, lower cholesterol and blood lipid levels, and anti-cancer. Objective: To review the use of Sea cucumber extract as an alternative treatment of inflammation by chronic periodontitis. Literature Review: Chronic periodontitis is an infectious disease that causes inflammation of the tooth supporting tissue, loss of attachment, and bone loss. Chronic periodontitis is the most common form of periodontitis and is characterized by a slow progression of the disease. Most cases of periodontitis occur in adults, about 15% of adults aged 21-50 years and 30% in people aged 50 years. Discussion: Sea cucumber also has bioactive components, namely saponins, chronoditin sulfate, glycosaminoglycans, polysaccharide sulfates, sterols, phenols, peptides, ceberosides, and lectins. Compounds in sea cucumber that have the potential to be anti-inflammatory are saponins. Saponins can reduce the activity of COX-2 which plays a role in stimulating inflammatory mediators. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the literature, sea cucumber extract has an effect on periodontitis and can be an alternative to treating inflammation.
