Knowledge Attitude and Practise Of Dental Practitioners Towards Anaphylactic Reaction to Local Anaesthesia

Author: AISHWARYA.S , SENTHIL MURUGAN.P
Abstract: Anaphylaxis is defined as “an acute potentially life threatening hypersensitivity reaction, involving the release of mediators from mast cells, basophils, and recruited inflammatory cells”. Vasoactive mediators actively released by mast cells, which are immunoglobulin E-mediated, cause systemic anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is one of the rare clinical events specifically related to anesthesia leading to morbidity and mortality. This may range from minor transient vasovagal attacks to life-threatening collapse. The aim of this study is to find out the awareness about the anaphylactic reactions and attitude of the dentist in case of encountering such cases. A self structured questionnaire was designed and consisted of questions regarding the awareness and attitude towards handling local anaesthesia anaphylaxis. The questionnaire was distributed through an online forum. The study population included 91 dental practitioners. The questions were carefully studied and the corresponding answers were marked by the participants. The data were collected and statistically analyzed using SPSS software. Majority of dentists were aware about the anaphylactic reactions of local anaesthesia. However, none of the participants demonstrated that they knew about all symptoms relating to anaphylaxis. The present study has revealed the lack of knowledge among dentists in Chennai in relation to anaphylactic reactions and its management. Knowledge of practicing dentists in this area can be increased by providing continuing education programs consisting of workshops and hands-on courses.
