Comparative Evaluation of Abrasive Resistance of Two Different Flowable Composites Using Brushing Simulator - A Scanning Electron Microscopy Study

Author: PRANATI T, SUBASH SHARMA
Abstract: Wear refers to the progressive loss of material from the surface of the teeth or restorative materials as a result chemical and mechanical processes such as erosion and abrasion. Resistance to abrasive wear is an important property of a dental material. It determines the longevity of the material in clinical service. The aim of this study is to assess the abrasion resistance of two different flowable composites – bulk fill composite and normal fill composite. Four samples each of bulk fill composite and normal fill composite were prepared and mounted on dye stone. Three samples were subjected to abrasion by brushing simulator (6x105 abrasive cycles) and one sample was taken as control. 2 samples in each were subjected to brushing simulation with toothpaste slurry and 1 sample without toothpaste slurry. The surface abrasion was measured using a scanning electron microscope (1000x magnification at 20.0kV acceleration voltage). The Electron microscopic photographs show that the samples which are subjected to abrasion using a brushing simulator along with toothpaste slurry had more wear compared to samples in which toothpaste slurry was not used. Bulk fill flowable composite has a better wear resistance compared to normal fill flowable composite. From the results it is evident that bulk fill flowable composites are more resistant to wear compared to normal fill flowable composites. Reduced filler content increases better polish ability but reduces the overall wear resistance.
