Assessment of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Periodontal Splints Among Dental Practitioners in India – A Kap Study

Author: GAURAV KETKAR, JAIGANESH RAMAMURTHY
Abstract: Tooth mobility is considered as the extent of horizontal and vertical tooth displacement created by examiner's force. Loss of tooth-supporting structures results in tooth mobility. Increased tooth mobility adversely affects function, aesthetics, and the patient’s comfort. Splints are used to overcome all these problems. Splinting of mobile teeth to stronger adjacent teeth is a viable option to prolong the life expectancy of loose teeth, splints provide required stability for the periodontium to reattach and also improves comfort, function and aesthetics of the patient. This study was conducted to assess the awareness about splinting procedure and types amongst dental practitioners in India.Aim of the study is to assess the knowledge and awareness about splinting procedure amongst the dental professionals in India. A survey was conducted among 125 dental practitioners among which 100 responded. The survey was distributed through questionnaire printouts and electronic media. The data was collected, analysed and interpreted. The results suggested that 90% of the dental practitioners had adequate knowledge and attitude about the splinting procedure and its various types. This survey concludes that the knowledge and attitude of dental practitioners in India regarding splinting procedure and its types is good overall but the practice needs some improvement.
