Author: APARNA.M , MANISH RANJAN
Abstract: Aesthetically pleasing restorations are much desirable in dentistry and various efforts have been made to develop a restorative material which may suit the patient's desires and needs. Dental composites, or resin-based composites, are synthetic materials that combine polymeric matrix with a dispersion of glass, mineral, or resin filler particles and short fibers by coupling agents. They are highly popular as they provide good esthetic appearance among patients and also have direct-filling capabilities. Numerous dental composite products have appeared in the past 15 years. Therefore the main aim of this study is to determine the knowledge, attitude and awareness of different types of dental composite materials and its application among dental students. The study had a sample size of 100 dental students. An online survey with a pretested and validated questionnaire consisting of 10 questions testing the awareness of different types of dental composites and its application. The questions regarding different types of composite materials , classification, clinical indications, and their applications were framed and shared with 100 dental students and their responses were recorded. Data was entered in Microsoft Excel sheets. The results imported into SPSS software. The results inferred that most of the respondents participated were males (51%) and many of them were interns (37%). About 80% of the respondents are aware of various types of composite materials and their clinical indications. It is found from the study that there was a moderate knowledge on different types of composite materials and their applications among the respondents. It is therefore essential to create awareness and continued professional education to be provided in their clinical training , so that they can achieve the desired knowledge and they may implement it in their clinical practice to expertise.
