Awareness and Practice of Microsurgery Among Dental Practitioners - A Survey

Author: ABIGAIL RANASINGHE, ARVINA RAJASEKAR
Abstract: In dentistry, manual dexterity and skill are essential factors required to achieve accurate results. Along with manual dexterity and skill, vision also plays an important role. In the present society dentists have numerous magnification systems to choose from, which range from simple to compound prismatic telescopic loupes and a vast variety of surgical microscopes. The use of magnification devices along with the microsurgical instruments and techniques can lead to improved surgical outcomes, thereby resulting in a higher quality of care. The aim of this study was to assess the awareness and attitude on microsurgery among dental practitioners. A 8-item questionnaire was prepared and circulated through an online portal among dental practitioners. A total of 100 dental practitioners took up the survey among which 59% were males and 41% were females. The results obtained from the survey were tabulated, analysed and represented graphically using SPSS software (Version 23). Frequency distribution and percentage were calculated. In the present study, 89% of the dental practitioners were aware about the usage of magnification devices used in dentistry. However only 35% of dental practitioners used magnification devices in their day today practice. Based on the results, it was found that even though the majority of the dental practitioners were aware about the magnification devices; the clinical application was less. Hence more awareness needs to be created among dental practitioners about the application of microsurgery in dentistry.
