Complete Morphometric Analysis of Intracranial and Extracranial Opening of Jugular Foramen

Author: JOHN FRANCIS, YUVARAJ BABU K
Abstract: The Jugular foramen lies between the occipital bone and petrous part temporal bone, base of the skull, located behind the carotid canal. The anterior compartment transmits the Inferior petrosal sinus. The intermediate compartment transmits the glossopharyngeal, vagus and accessory nerves. The posterior compartment transmits the sigmoid sinus and some meningeal branches from the occipital and ascending pharyngeal arteries. This foramen is often called as jugular bulls as it is of various size and shape and many glomus tumors are related with this foramen. Many studies have been done on morphometric analysis on Jugular foramen with a certain group of people with a certain age limit. The study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College and Hospital. About 30 dry and unsexed cut skulls were taken in study and vernier caliper was used to measure both the intracranial and the extracranial length and breadth of jugular foramen. In our study the average extracranial length was 13.15 + 0.88 mm on the left and 13.75 + 1.14mm on the right side. The average extracranial breadth was 8.63 + 1.12 mm on the left and 9.19 + 0.93mm on the right side jugular foramen and the average intracranial length was 12.92 + 0.77 mm on the left and 13.22 + 1.11 mm on the right side. The average intracranial breadth was 7.31 + 1.15 mm on the left and 7.93 + 1.05 mm on the right side jugular foramen This study helps to determine the morphometric of jugular foramen in relation to various anatomical structures which will help the surgeons to plan their surgeries
