Audiovisual Modelling - An Efficient Method For Reducing Anxiety In Children Undergoing Digital Panoramic Radiograph

Author: ABARNA JAWAHAR, G.MARAGATHAVALLI
Abstract: Children undergoing digital panoramic radiograph often exhibit anxiety and fear due to the presence of huge revolving X-ray machines and an unknown environment causing them to move during imaging leading to distortion of images requiring repetition and leading to increased radiation exposure. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of audiovisual modeling in managing anxious pediatric patients who are undergoing digital panoramic imaging in the radiology department. Fifty children between 3-8 years old indicated for panoramic radiograph were included in the study. Most of the patients on entering the imaging room showed anxiety, which was assessed using Anxious and disruptive behaviour code(ADBC). An audiovisual clip was shown where the role model children underwent panoramic imaging effectively with the instructions of how to undergo the imaging procedure. Then the patients were taken to the imaging room after audiovisual modeling and was assessed again using ADBC by the primary researcher. The collected data was entered in SPSS and analysed statistically. Wilcoxon signed rank test was done and a statistically significant difference was observed in all the characteristic events before and after audiovisual modeling. Audiovisual modeling was found to be an effective method in reducing anxious and disruptive behaviour in children undergoing digital panoramic imaging.
