Orthodontic Treatment Need Among Children Reporting To A Private Dental Hospital

Author: NURUL BINTI, DHANRAJ GANAPATHY, REVATHI DURAISAMY
Abstract: Information on the orthodontic treatment needs of the child population is required to plan orthodontic treatment within a public health system. This stresses the importance of epidemiological studies in order to gain knowledge about the prevalence of need for orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need of children reporting to a private dental hospital. Children between the age 6 to 17 years who reported to a private dental hospital between December 2019 to January 2020 were selected for the study. The criterion for selection was children between the age 6-17 years with no history of orthodontic treatment. Demographic data such as age and gender as well as presence of oral habits and orthodontic treatment need were recorded. Orthodontic treatment need was assessed using the dental health component (DHC) of index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN). Data was analysed using SPSS Software and a chi-square test was done to find out association between variables. A total of 109 children were examined. 28.4% were in definite need for treatment, 31.2% had borderline need and 40.4% did not need orthodontic treatment. Definite need was higher in females (29%) compared to males (27.5%). Majority of children with definite need for treatment were in the age group 15-17 years (35.8%), followed by children 12-14 years (35.7%). Association between orthodontic treatment need in gender and age group was statistically not significant (p>0.05). Definite need for orthodontic treatment was significantly higher in children who presented with oral habits (64%)(p<0.05). Within the limits of this study, it was observed that more than half of children were in need for orthodontic treatment with 28.4% in definite need for treatment.Definite need for treatment was higher in females, in age group 15-17 years and in children with oral habits.
