Author: JERUSHA PACKYANATHAN, DR.PREETHA S, DR.LAVANYA PRATHAP
Abstract: Hypertension is a disease which is nowadays most commonly seen and has been found that regular exercise tends to reduce the levels of high blood pressure in a very effective way. In line with this , the effects of aerobics exercise on reducing high blood pressure in hypertensive patients has been convincing. Zumba dance is another form of exercise that is gaining popularity in controlling hypertension. The aim of this study was to understand how blood pressure is altered by aerobics and zumba among hypertensive patients. The study was conducted among 60 randomly selected hypertensive patients of age group 30-50 years in a gym centre in Chennai, Tamilnadu. 30 were engaged in aerobics and 30 were engaged in zumba dance. The data was statistically analysed using SPSS software version 20.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Paired and unpaired T test was used to study the data collected and to analyse the significance. On analysis of data it was observed that after both aerobics exercise and zumba there was reduction in systolic and diastolic pressure in hypertensive patients. This reduction was significant among zumba dance participants than aerobic exercise. Exercises thus not only helps in fitness but also improves quality of life.
