Abstract:

The human skull is made up of several bones and it consists of several bony landmarks and features an enclosed brain and its coverings. The craniometrical points are very important in measuring the skull in various aspects for anthropometric studies, sex determination, anatomical and surgical procedures, etc. The occipital regions constitute bones which found in normal occipitalis, it has its own anatomical and surgical significance. The interest for the transcondylar approach requires information regarding the morphometric aspects of the occipital condyle and structures around it. The aim of the present study is to analyse the occipital triangles in South Indian dry skulls by morphometrically. The present study has adopted 40 human dry skulls from the Department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental college and Hospitals. The following parameters are preferred to measure by using vernier caliper. They are height of occipital triangle (HOT), height of occipital triangle with foramen magnum (HOW), major width of occipital condyle (MOC), major width of jugular process (MJP), height of foramen magnum (HFM) and width of foramen magnum (WFM).The results were represented as graphs. The present study thus concluded that the morphometric measurement of the occipital triangle is of utmost importance in clinical and surgical procedures, anthropological studies and provides an important baseline for further research in this field.
