Effect Of Violent And Non Violent Video Games On Blood Pressure And Pulse Rate Among College Students

Author: M.LAKSITA , M.JEEVITHA, S.PREETHA
Abstract: Playing video games are nowadays represented as sedentary behaviour and increases the risk of weight gain and hypertension. We investigated the acute effects of violent and non-violent video-game playing on blood pressure (BP), pulse rate, appetite perception and food preferences. Our main aim is to study the effect of violent and non-violent video games on blood pressure and pulse rate among college students. Twenty young, normal-weight men (18 - 20 years) were made to play both violent and non violent games in the morning hours. The blood pressure and pulse rate was checked using a digital blood pressure monitor. The results were collected and statistics were analysed using anova test. As a result, There was a difference between the group concerning both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and the heart rate. For violent games, there was a highly significant difference (p<0.005) for all the variables before, during and after gaming. For non violent games, there was no statistical significance for diastolic blood pressure and pulse rate (p>0.05), but there was a significant difference for systolic blood pressure (p<0.05). The study showed that both violent and non violent games have an effect on blood pressure and pulse rate and the violent games shown to influence more on the blood pressure and pulse rate than the non violent games.
