White spot lesions are defined as areas of white opacities occurring as a result of subsurface enamel demineralization on smooth surfaces of teeth. Decalcification is manifested as white spot lesion after the orthodontic treatment. They represent major esthetic problems. Diagnosis and prevention of these lesions is very important to avoid further cavities. It is the responsibility of the orthodontist to reduce the risk of the patient having white spot lesions as a consequence of orthodontic treatment by educating and motivating the patients for excellent oral hygiene practice. It is recommended that mouth rinsing during other times than tooth brushing increases the frequency of fluoride intake, which might enhance the effectiveness in preventing white spot lesion development or progression during orthodontic treatment. Thus, proper oral hygiene instructions are necessary for the patient to prevent white spot lesions.
