Knowledge and awareness of cleft lip or palate among women in general population

Abstract: Cleft lips and cleft palate are the most common birth defects. Cleft lip and palate are opening in the upper lip, roof of mouth. Cleft lip/palate may cause when the facial structure of a developing baby fails to fuse together. The major reason for having a baby with cleft lip / palate is the deficiency of folic acid. Environmental factors such as maternal hormonal disorders, vitamin deficiency, hypoxia, use of psychiatric meditations, cigarette smoking and maternal obesity and overweight can also be the reason for the disorder. A self designed questionnaire of 12 questions were framed based on the knowledge and awareness of cleft lip / palate among South Indian women online using Google forms. 120 Participants were included in the study in the age groups 20 to 45 years. Statistics were analysed from the data collected. Totally, 120 responses were recorded, among them 55% of women are between the age of 20-25 years, 17% were between the age of 25-30 and 19% were between the age of 30-40. 72% of women responded are aware that Cleft lip/palate are opening or split in the upper lip , the roof of the mouth or both, and the remaining 27% are not aware of this. Mother’s knowledge about Cleft lips and cleft palate nature might encourage better health related Behaviour in the children. The presence study showed an adequate awareness of cleft lip/palate among women in the general population. Knowledge like causes and complications of cleft lip/palate are yet to be improved through various health Campaigns.
