Knowledge And Awareness Of The Importance Of Daily Intake Of Folic Acid Among Women Of Child Bearing Age

Abstract: Nutritional anaemia in India is common morbidity seen in the late adolescent and young female population. It is necessary to compare the effectiveness of weekly vs daily and folic acid supplementation for control in teenage girls in our day to day life. In recent years because of the environmental changes and technological development there are many conflicting opinions regarding dosage of iron folic acid supplementation for managing nutritional deficiency disorder. A cross sectional survey was initiated from a randomly chosen population of 203 female Participants. Inform consent was obtained from the participants and confidentiality of the records were ensured. This study was done among women in the general public who are in child bearing age. The survey was conducted online using survey planet .The survey instrument used was a pretested questionnaire comprising 10 questions eliciting responses pertaining to the knowledge and attitude towards daily folic acid intake. 55% were at the age of 21 to 25 years. 85% assumes that intake of folic acid is good for women of child bearing age. 54% answered that the daily requirement of intake of folic acid in women is 100mcg. 64.5% aware that folic acid is vitamin C. 74.6% aware that if there is excess folic acid then it will excrete in urine. 71.6% aware that folic acid will reduce the risk of cancer. 56.1% answered that folate is important in RBC formation. 88.3% think that folic acid will prevent the neural tube defects in babies. 51.8% answered that folic acid is required in one month of pregnancy. 65.6% answered folic acid supplement is advised for five weeks during pregnancy. This study underscores the need for better health education and greater involvement of health professionals in promoting essential information among women, especially in their preconception period even though this study shows enough knowledge. Folic acid supplementation before pregnancy and during the child- bearing ages is essential for all communities.
