In prosthodontics, various indirect restorative methods like casting and heat sintering procedures are widely in use but they have a few limitations. To overcome these shortcomings, a milling procedure was introduced. It is known as the process of breaking down, sizing, separating, or classifying aggregate materials. Through the milling procedure, any restoration can be fabricated by subtractive manufacturing. Milling machines are classified into two namely Horizontal milling machines and vertical milling machines. The term “5-axis” refers to the number of directions in which the cutting tool can move. The study aims to evaluate awareness on 5 axis milling machines among undergraduate dental students of Saveetha Dental College. It consisted of 10 questions, an email invitation sent to complete an electronic survey through survey planet was sent to the 100 dental students. The data was collected and interpreted as a pie chart and bar graph. In the current study, about 52% of the respondents were aware of 5 axis milling machines and 58% were aware of CAD-CAM. 60% of the respondents believed that 3 axis milling was better than 5 axis milling machine and 54% were aware of the error margins in 5 axis milling machines. A statistically significant association was found between the year of study and comparison between 3D printing machines and 5 axis milling machine and also between gender (males) and the awareness on 5 axis milling machine (p <0.05). From the survey, it is seen that only half of the study participants were aware about the 5 axis milling machine. Hence, awareness on the different milling machines should be created through educational programs and other interventions.
