Awareness of Oil Pulling Among Dental Students and Practitioners - A Survey

Author: SWETAA.A , JESSY P
Abstract: Oil pulling is also a traditional home remedy which cures about 30 systemic diseases ranging from headache, migraine to diabetes and asthma also it prevents teeth decay, oral malodor, bleeding gums, dryness of throat and cracked lips and for strengthening the teeth, gums and jaws. The aim of the study is to evaluate the awareness of oil pulling among dental students and practitioners. This study was carried out in an online setting with advantage of flexible data retrieved and disadvantage of statistical error while recording. The questionnaire consisted of 17 questions, and was distributed in the online forum ”SurveyPlant”. The questionnaire was based on awareness on oil pulling . All the datas was analysed by multiple logistic and tabulated in MS excel sheet and variables were added and imported to SPSS. Using SPSS Version 20.0, descriptive statistics were carried out and figures were plotted to arrive at final inference. The results proved that overall 87% of them are aware of oil pulling, 88% of the population believe oil pulling is effective in improving gums and gingiva. Most of them i.e 88% are aware that oil pulling kills bacteria in the mouth.Hence it can be concluded that overall 87% of them are aware of oil pulling. Though there was increased awareness among dental students and practitioners, they do not follow which shows the avoidance of such therapy. As oil pulling serves as a traditional home remedy,it can be done on a daily basis, however oil pulling does not replace dental therapy.
