Diabetes is a clinical disorder characterised by an increase in both fasting and postprandial blood sugar level( hyperglycemia) caused due to relative or absolute deficiency of the hormone Insulin. There is a sharp increase in the incidence of diabetes in the recent decades. The current study evaluates the antidiabetic therapeutic approach.Inhibition of the carbohydrate digestive enzymes such as a-amylase and a-glucosidase can decrease the absorption of postprandial glucose in to blood and thus can decrease blood glucose level. Thus can be a good management strategy of postprandial blood glucose level The aim of the current study was to evaluate the hypoglycemic potential of methanolic root extract of Salacia oblonga .The root was purchased from a herbal care and cure centre, weighed, washed and crushed into powder.Methanolic root extract exhibited a dose dependent increase in the perce inhibition of a- amylase(60% inhibition at 0.3mg/ml) and a-glucosidase activity(50% inhibition at 0.3mg/ml) as compared to the standard drug Acarbose. From the present study it is evident that Salacia oblonga possesses anti diabetic potential.
