Identification process using dental records follows a special dental pattern which is unique for that individual. A dental pattern (DP) is defined as a combination of distinct codes assigned to specific tooth conditions namely virgin, missing, filling and restored teeth on the entire dentition, or groups of teeth, the resulting pattern is noted for diversity. The aim of this study was to study the dental patterns and evaluate their diversity using panoramic radiographs in Chennai population. The retrospective study was conducted in a dental college from Chennai. The data was obtained from the radiology department. The sample size was 50 panoramic radiographs (PR). The dental patterns were assigned on the PR and diversity was calculated using Simpson’s diversity index and Chi square test was done with SPSS version 23. It was observed that diversity in percentage for full dentition was 98.8%, maxilla was 97.5%, mandible - 97.8%, UR-99.8%, UA-99.5%, UL-99.9%, LR-99.9%, LA-99.2%, LL-99.9%. Within the limits of the study, it was observed that the overall diversity value for full dentition was 98.8% in Chennai population, and also the panoramic radiographs are a useful aid in personal identification not only in the presence of all the teeth but also with a part of the whole dentition.
