Human Red Blood Cell (Hrbc) Membrane Stabilization Potential of Crude Methanolic Leaf Extract of Gymnema Sylvestre - An In Vitro Study

Author: LEKHA.D , R.GAYATHRI, V.VISHNU PRIYA
Abstract: Gymnema sylvestre is an herb native to India and Sri lanka. Its leaves, called “Gurmar” in India, are widely recognised for their candy taste suppressing activity . Inflammation is a complex process, which is frequently associated with pain which involves events such as the increase of vascular permeability, increase of protein denaturation and membrane alteration. Gymnema sylvestre is a part of ayurvedic medicine which is usually used to treat diabetes and hyperlipidemia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the anti- inflammatory potential of the methanolic leaf extract of Gymnema sylvestre.Gymnema sylvestre leaves were purchased from herbal care centre and methanol extract was prepared. Anti inflammatory potential of the extract was tested by Albumin denaturation inhibition assay and hypotonicity induced human red blood cell membrane stabilization potential assay. It was evident that the plant extract exhibited anti inflammatory potential comparable to the standard drug diclofenac. At a concentration of 500 µg/ml the plant extract exhibited 74% protection, whereas the standard drug diclofenac exhibited 89% protection for the same concentration. The study proves the anti inflammatory potential of the leaf extract with the good prospects of development in to anti inflammatory drug.
