The leaves were washed and crushed to prepare methanolic extract. The study on the hypoglycemic activity of leaf extract of Gymnema sylvestre supports the use of traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.Methanolic Leaf extract exhibited a dose dependent increase in the percentage inhibition of a- amylase(79% inhibition at 0.5mg/ml) and a-glucosidase activity(89% inhibition at 0.5mg/ml) as compared to the standard drug Acarbose. From the present study it is evident that the methanolic leaf extract of Gymnema sylvestre possesses anti diabetic potential.
