Diabetes is a metabolic disorder affecting Carbohydrates,Fats and Protein metabolism and characterised by an increase in fasting and postprandial blood sugar levels.Prolonged hyperglycemia can lead to various diabetic complications .Gymnema sylvestre is common herb found in India.Gymnema sylvestre belong to Family -Asclepiadaceae, Genus -Gymnema. Gymnema sylvestre which was extensively used for curing various ailments like diabetes and malaria. There is a need to evaluate the extract of this leaf in order to provide the scientific proof The leaves of Gymnema sylvestre were purchased in a herbal care and cure center in Chennai. The leaves were washed and crushed to prepare methanolic extract. The study on the hypoglycemic activity of leaf extract of Gymnema sylvestre supports the use of traditional medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.Methanolic Leaf extract exhibited a dose dependent increase in the percentage inhibition of a- amylase(79% inhibition at 0.5mg/ml) and a-glucosidase activity(89% inhibition at 0.5mg/ml) as compared to the standard drug Acarbose. From the present study it is evident that the methanolic leaf extract of Gymnema sylvestre possesses anti diabetic potential.
