Assessment of Bolton’s Ratio Including the Second Molar Using 3shape Software

Author: ANJALI THOMAS, SRIRENGALAKSHMI M
Abstract: The aim of the study was to assess Bolton's ratio including the second molar using 3shape ortho analyzer software.Sample included 3D study models of 50 patients of 18 years and above from the Department of Orthodontics, Saveetha Dental College,Chennai. The subjects were selected for the study based on the following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients had no previous history of orthodontic treatment, extraction or missing teeth. The mesio-distal widths of all the teeth from second molar to second molar on both the arches were measured using 3shape ortho analyzer software. The mean of the Bolton’s overall ratio including the second molar was found to be 94.94% with a standard deviation of 2.36%. An independent t test was done between the sum of the mesiodistal widths of the first molar to first molar and that of the second molar to second molar using IBM SPSS software(p value-0.001;<0.05), hence statistically significant. Pearson's correlation was done to find the correlation between the Bolton’s ratio including the 2nd molar and that with the 1st molar(Pearson’s correlation value-0.004; p value-0.973); hence statistically not significant. Second molar has become increasingly valued in the current orthodontic treatment process and in the proper finishing of an orthodontic case. So this study developed a Bolton’s ratio including the second molar which would be beneficial in the diagnosis and treatment planning in the orthodontic clinical practice.
