Comparative Evaluation of The Effect of Amoxicillin and Doxycycline as An Adjunct to Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy in Reduction of Inflammation Among Generalised Chronic Periodontitis Patients

Author: SIDDHARTH NARAYAN, SANKARI MALAIAPPAN
Abstract: The present study aimed at comparing the effect of Amoxicillin and Doxycycline as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy at reducing clinical parameters of inflammation among generalised chronic periodontitis patients conducted as a prospective single blinded randomised single centre clinical trial in a Dental college and hospital-based setup. Thirty patients were recruited in the study, divided into two groups of fifteen patients matched with age and gender. Treatment done for all patients included full mouth scaling and root planing separated by 1 week. Patients were prescribed medication after root planing appointment which included an antibiotic and a standardised pain killer. All clinical parameters were recorded by a single operator using a williams periodontal probe at baseline and 10 days after completion of root planing. It was observed that, clinical attachment loss (1.6 vs 1.4?mm, p=0.00) and gingival enlargement scale (2.26 vs 2.2, p=0.00) in Doxycycline group while the Amoxicillin group probing pocket depth (2.4 vs 2.2 mm, p=0.00), respectively. Within the limits of the present study, it was observed that there was a reduction of clinical parameters namely clinical attachment , probing pocket depth, Gingival enlargement after the use of either Amoxicillin or Doxycycline as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal, clinically and statistically significant. Doxycycline showed greater reduction of CAL and gingival inflammatory enlargement while Amoxicillin showed greater reduction of PPD.
