In Vitro Antidiabetic Potential of Aqueous Cladode Extract of Opuntia Dillenii

Author: SARVASRI T, R.GAYATHRI, V.VISHNU PRIYA
Abstract: Diabetes is a metabolic disorder associated with disturbances with carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism leading to an increase in both fasting and postprandial blood sugar. Herbal medicines are used nowadays for curing many disorders.Opuntia dillenii, commonly known as prickly pear, a well known member of the cactaceae family, usually grows in the arid and desert region. It was a part of folk medicine and has been used to treat many diseases. The aim of this study is to prove the anti diabetic potential of Opuntia dillenii.Opuntia dillenii plant was purchased from a nursery in Chennai. Cladode was carefully removed, washed with care and cut into pieces, crushed using mortar and pestle to prepare the crude 80% aqueous extract. Hypoglycemic potential was analysed by in vitro a-amylase inhibitory activity and a-glucosidase inhibitory activity. The crude aqueous cladode extract of Opuntia dillenii was proved to possess a good hypoglycemic activity as compared with the standard drug acarbose. The present study proves the effectiveness of the folkloric usage of Opuntia dillenii in the treatment of diabetes. However, it needs extensive in vivo and toxicity testing before the extract can be commercially used in the treatment of diabetes.
