Periodontal disease is one of the two most important oral diseases contributing to the global burden of chronic disease. Periodontal problems are generally a disease in the gums which begins with bacterial growth and leads to tooth loss due to the destruction of the tissue that surrounds the teeth. Questionnaire was prepared and administered to 100 participants through a manual survey. The study participants include the population from south of India. The responses are collected and analyzed statistically using SPSS for descriptive and association analysis. The results of the survey suggest the perception among study participants about maintenance of oral hygiene as a mandatory element to overall health of the body where 91% answered yes, The response with regard to number of times the study participants clean their teeth per day 67% answered once and 33% answered twice. The association analysis was done statistically to analyze the significance of responses between gender which inferes significant difference between the male and female responses in most of the items with p value < 0.05. From the obtained results of the survey it is evident that periodontal health among the South Indian population is fair and insists the need for its awareness.
