Evaluation of Sexual Dimorphism Using Morphometric Analysis of Clavicle

Author: KEERTHANA B, S.SANGEETHA
Abstract: Clavicle is a long bone which is situated in between the shoulder bone and the sternum (breast bone). It is also called the collarbone. It’s function is to hold the arms. Determination of sex constitutes the most important element during the identification process of human skeletal remains. This becomes even more challenging when only a single bone like the clavicle is available. The main aim was to study the parameters of the clavicle and to determine the sexual dimorphism in human clavicles by morphometric analysis. This study was conducted in the department of Anatomy, Saveetha Dental College and Sri Ramachandra Institute of Medical and Higher studies, Chennai. 30 human dry clavicles were used of known sex for this study out of which 15 were males and 15 were females. Measurements were measured using the vernier caliper. Measurements measured are Length, Sternal diameter, acromial diameter, mid shaft circumference, medial curvature and lateral curvature depth. The data collected were analysed and later made into graphs. The statistics used here is the comparative statistics. The mean of the maximum length of the clavicle were more in males compared to females. Also the mid shaft circumference value of the male clavicles were more compared to the females. By this present study, the author highlights the importance of clavicle from skeletal remains, whose identification is not known and thus it helps in the forensic sciences in medico legal issues and also the anthropologists in their study of evolution of mankind. Further studies can be made on the foramen of clavicle bone.
