Morphometric Study Of Lower End Of Dry Femur In Indian Population And Its Clinical Implications

Author: S.SELVAPRIYA , S.SANGEETHA
Abstract: The femur bone is the longest bone in the body. The two femur bones combine medically towards the knees, where they articulate with the proximal ends of tibia. The knee joint is one of the major joints of our body and the lower end of the femur forms important components of it. Knee replacement surgery can be implemented as a partial or a total knee replacement. Accurate morphometric anatomical data of the lower end of femur is useful to make design of total knee joint replacement. Present study was done to find out morphometric analysis of the lower end of dry femur done in Indian population. For the present study the materials consisted of 50 dry femur bone was collected from the Saveetha dental college and Sri Ramachandra Medical college in department of Anatomy.we have selected four metrical parameters 1) Medial condylar anteroposterior distance 2) Lateral condylar anteroposterior distance 3) Bicondylar width 4) Intercondylar notch width are measured by vernier calliper. There is significant difference in morphometric data of the lower end of femur in various populations of countries across as well as population within India. There are several studies done which are based on Gujarat region and Indian population.Comparing two populations although the Indians have smaller knees as compared to them. The morphometric analytic data of the lower end of dry femur will be useful to select the correct prosthesis according to measurement.
