Crown lengthening is a procedure done in many clinical scenarios and it should be done without violating the biological width. The advantages of reduced pain and decreased discomfort have popularized the application of lasers in dentistry. Soft tissue (diode) lasers have been used extensively in dentistry, however, in the recent past, hard lasers like Er,Cr:YSGG have slowly gained more acceptance. Thirty patients who were referred to the department of Periodontology were included in the study who were divided into two groups, soft tissue laser (n=15) or hard tissue laser (n=15). Patient comfort is as important as the effectiveness of any therapy. Hence, to evaluate the pain perception during therapeutic procedures, various scales have been used in the past, of which Visual Analogue Scale is one of them. The present study was done to compare and assess the intraoperative pain using VAS scale during crown lengthening procedures using soft tissue laser and hard tissue laser and it was found that the hard tissue had a better outcome in regard to pain perception when compared to soft tissue laser in crown lengthening procedures.
