In vivo Analysis of The Alteration of Salivary Ph By Chewing Fennel Seeds in Caries Patient

Author: KOWSHIHAN P, MURALIDHARAN N.P
Abstract: To determine the alteration of salivary pH in caries patients by chewing fennel seeds. In this study 50 individuals were randomly selected. They belong to two groups, the group 1 has 25 healthy volunteers and the group 2 has 25 caries patients. All the individuals in both the groups were given 2 gra0.ms of fennel seeds and were asked to chew for 2 minutes and then the mouth was rinsed with clean neutral water. Saliva samples were collected before and after chewing fennel seeds. The pH of the Saliva is estimated using a pH meter and tabulated. In the case of normal people, the salivary pH observed before chewing fennel seeds is at the normal salivary pH ,6.2 - 7.4 as they don’t have any caries lesions. After chewing of fennel seeds it is elevated to a range between 7.2 - 7.8 and this increase in pH has been maintained for a few minutes. In caries patients the pH was acidic, the range of the pH before chewing fennel seeds was between 6.1 - 6.4, Where it increased after chewing fennel seeds is observed in the range of 7 - 7.4, also it is observed that the increase in salivary pH was maintained for a few minutes. Due to the acidic nature of saliva in the caries individual the substance that is used to neutralise should have a long-standing effect in stabilising the salivary ph. When compared to many products, fennel seeds have shown a greater alteration in the salivary pH and sustained for longer duration.
