The use of a combination of choline and inositol in the treatment of infertility in women with the polycystic ovarian syndrome

Author: TAGHREED SALAH ALQUZWINI
Abstract: Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common infertility cause in women around the world. The treatment of this syndrome can be overwhelming for women that seek conceiving. Many treatment methods can be used, especially those with hormonal-like effects, such as clomifene or metformin; however, different rates of success and multiple side effects can be introduced due to the use of these methods. Objectives: The present clinical trial was conducted to identify the successful outcomes of using a choline-inositol combination (CIC) in the treatment of infertility in women with PCOS. Patients: Sixty women (BMI mean=34kg/m2) with primary (27 females) and secondary (33 females) infertility due to PCOS were included in the treatment trial. These women had cycle irregularity of amenorrhoea, oligomenorrhoea, and irregular regularity in 9 (18.75%), 17 (35.42%), and 22 (45.83%) women, respectively. Follow-ups were performed for 3 to 9 months after the use of the treatment. Results: The findings revealed that CIC significantly (p?0.01) lowered the BMI mean to 29kg/m2 in the treated women. Moreover, CIC significantly (p?0.01) corrected all the primary and secondary infertility cases. Importantly, CIC significantly (p?0.01) induced accumulative pregnancy rates in 7 (11.7%), 20 (33.3%), and 46 (76.7%) women after 3, 6, and 9 months of follow-ups. In all women with cycle irregularity, CIC significantly (p?0.01) decreased the rates of irregularity to be only in 9 (18.75%) women. Conclusion: The choline-inositol combination may introduce a new treatment era of the polycystic ovarian syndrome in women with primary and secondary infertility.
