A turbidimetric method for the quantitative determination of cyproheptadine hydrochloride in tablets using an optoelectronic detector based on the LEDs array

Author: JALAL JEBER, NAGHAM S. TURKEY
Abstract: A highly sensitive, accurate, economic and simple turbidimetric method was developed and validated for the quantitative determination of cyproheptadine hydrochloride (CPH) in tablets. A flow injection system combined with a homemade NAG Dual & Solo (0-180º) analyser which contains two identical detections units (cell 1 and 2) was applied for turbidity measurements. The proposed method is based on measuring the turbidity values of a white product which was formed as a result of the reaction between the CPH and bismuth nitrate. A series of physical and chemical parameters such as aqueous solutions, bismuth nitrate concentration, flow rate, sample volume, loop length, purge time and mixing coil were investigated to enhancement the sensitivity of the method. The proposed method was a linear over the range 0.5-14 mmol/L and 0.3-14 mmol/L, with LOD 0.29 mmol/L and 0.27 mmol/L for cell 1 and cell 2 respectively. The proposed was successfully applied to the assay of commercial tablets and the obtained results were statistically compared with the results obtained by the official method (USP) and were found to be in an excellent agreement. The ICH guidelines were followed for method validation and the proposed method can be conveniently used for routine analysis in a laboratory as a quality control method since the method permits quantitively determination of CPH (60 samples/hr.).
