Correlation of body mass index and vo2 max in physiotherapy students

Author: MALARVIZHI D, METHA K S
Abstract: Background: Body Mass Index plays a major role in physical fitness and physical activity for Physiotherapy students in their practice and VO2 MAX is determined by six minute walk test to identify the health status of Physiotherapy students. Objective: The purpose of the study to determine the relationship between body mass index and VO2max. Materials and methods: The study was conducted with samples of about 100 (both male and female) Physiotherapy students aged between 18 -24 years using random sampling method. Students will be divided based on their BMI .Six minute walk test is used to calculate the functional capacity of the students; it was conducted on a 15 meter straight corridor marked with starting and ending point with cones. Pre and Post- test includes heart rate, blood pressure, Spo2 and dyspnoea using Borg scale. Results: The BMI mean value 21.9311and Vo2max mean value 23.9110. There was a negative correlation between Body Mass Index of normal range of r-value -0.083 and Vo2max and underweight of r-value 0.053 , overweight of r-value-0.355 and obese range of r-value-0.652 and Vo2max. Conclusion: The study concluded that,Vo2max value calculated by Six Minute Walk Test is negatively correlated with Body Mass Index because of lack of physical activity and physical fitness in normal range individual atleast they should perform minimal exercise in daily living and Body Mass Index of underweight , overweight and obese range is negatively correlated with Vo2max because student is not in the normal range of BMI and lack of health status in underweight students and lack of physical fitness in overweight and obese students.
