Compare the effectiveness of neurodynamic mobilization and PNF program in improving sensorimotor function in diabetic neuropathy in lower limbs

Author: PETETI SAIRAM, SURESH J
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin action, insulin secretion or both. Distal Sensorimotor neuropathy is the most common complication of diabetes which mainly affects the lower limbs. Lots of complications have been associated with diabetes. Neuropathies are one of the most common long term complications of diabetes affecting up to 50% of patients. Diabetic neuropathy is responsible for 50% to 75% of non-traumatic amputation. AIM & OBJECTIVE: To compare effectiveness of neurodynamic mobilization and PNF program in improving sensorimotor function in diabetic neuropathy in lower limbs. METHODOLOGY: Subjects are selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, test procedure was explained to the subjects. And the informed consent was taken from them. The subjects were be divided into 2 Groups(Group A and Group B), Before and After the intervention pre and post test values were measured using Diabetic neuropathy examination, 10 meter walk test, Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index. Neurodynamic mobilization and conventional physiotherapy for diabetic neuropathy in lower limbs was give for Group A, subjects for 3times/week , for 4weeks. Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation program and convential physiotherapy for diabetic neuropathy in lower limbs was give for Group B, the subjects were treated with 3 sets of exercises one hour each day with 10 minutes of rest between each set, for 3 days/week for 4 weeks. Each set of exercise consists of 5 repetitions of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) patterns. OUTCOME MEASURES: Diabetic Neuropathy Examination, 10 Meter Walk Test, Health Assessment Questionnaire Disability Index. RESULTS: After 4 weeks of intervention the outcome measures improved significantly in Group A and Group B in diabetic neuropathy examination(DNE), 10 meter walk test (10MWT) and Health assessment questionnaire(HAQ DI) both the groups shows significant changes in baseline measurements. CONCLUSION: This study concluded that neurodynamic mobilization and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation has an effect on sensiormotor function of diabetic neuropathy in lower limbs
