Abstract: Background: Nutritional status forms an integral part of adequate growth and development. A well-nourished adolescent is a great asset as they form the most productive component of an economy. With a rising triple burden of malnutrition, overnutrition has also been gaining importance. Aim: This study was carried out to assess the various socio-economic, demographic characteristics of adolescents and to assess the prevalence of overnutrition and the factors associated with it. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted during Oct 2017-2019 on 700 adolescents aged 10-15 years from randomly selected schools of Karad taluka, Maharashtra, India. Socio-economic and demographic characteristics, nutritional status and various behavioural and dietary habits affecting nutritional status were studied. Nutritional status was assessed using height, weight, BMI. Statistical tests like mean, standard deviation, chi-square and odds ratio were included. Results: The present study showed a positive co-relation between age and height, weight, BMI. The overall prevalence of overnutrition was found to be 16.3%. This study showed that upper socio-economic status, increase in screen time including television and gadgets, consumption of fast food and carbonated drinks, and lack of physical activity were risk factors for overweight and obesity. Conclusion: Adolescence is considered to be the right age to introduce primordial prevention. The rising overnutrition in this age group has been of concern as it acts as a precursor for a vast majority of non-communicable diseases. A balanced diet with adequate physical activity will enhance adequate physical, social and mental development thus leading to a healthy adolescent.
