Objective: Study was aimed to assessLVH in hypertensive patients based on left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and assess its correlation with severity of disease.
Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted from 2017 to 2019, involving 73 hypertensive patientsaged>18 years. Detailed history, physical examination and clinical investigations were performed. The results were analyzed by SPSS version 21.0 (IBM).
Results: TheLVH findings were found to be significantly different by the two different techniques. Moreover, insignificant difference was found between the prevalence of LVH and patient-centric features such as gender, age group, hypertension grade, comorbid conditions, and treatment received by patients. Furthermore, no significant difference was observed between the proportions of LVH detected by electrocardiography (ECG) and 2-D transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) (P=0.31). The correlation between the various left ventricular dimensions such as left ventricular internal diameter (LVId), interventricular septal thickness (IVSd), posterior wall thickness (PWTd),and LVM and mass index were found to be statistically significant(P<0.001).
Conclusion: There is a positive correlation between the presence of LVH and LVMI. Evaluation of LVH and LVM can be of enormous help in the better management of hypertension and future outcomes in the long run.
