Background: Intramuscular (IM) injections are commonly administered in nursing care. Hence, adequate knowledge and practice is essential in administering IM injections. Inadequate administration can lead to complications for the patient or needle stick injury for the professional. Therefore, it is important to assess the knowledge and practice of the nurses regarding IM injection administration, which not many studies have been reported. The study aimed to determine the knowledge and practice skills of nursing staff pertaining to administration of IM injections, their correlation and association with demographic variables.
Methodology: The cross-sectional study was conducted on 150 staff nurses. A validated structured questionnaire and observational checklist was used to evaluate knowledge of staff nurses in the administration of an IM and practice skills. Spearman correlation was performed to assess the correlation between knowledge and practice skills, Chi-square test was applied to study the association between demographic variables and study data.
Results: Average score (n=81) was observed with respect to knowledge and good score (n=66) was observed for practice skills. A weak correlation was observed with respect to knowledge and practice skills (P=0.31). Knowledge score was highly associated with all other demographics except gender at P<0.03. Practice score was associated with age, educational qualification, and work experience (P<0.03).
Conclusion: Practice scores were evident in the population in comparison to knowledge score.
