To Assess The Effectiveness Of Structured Teaching Program (STP) On Knowledge Regarding Prevention Of Tuberculosis Among HIV Infected People: An Observational Study

Author: A.V.KATTI , N. R. KAKADE, AFSANA MULANI, VAISHALI R.MOHITE;
Abstract: Background HIV-infected patients are comparatively at a higher risk of developing tuberculosis (TB) than HIV-negative people. Due to poor knowledge regarding TB among these HIV-infected people, the rate of TB transmission is high. Consequently, structure teaching program (STP) could be an effective means of promotion of TB prevention knowledge among the patients. Objective To assess the knowledge on prevention of tuberculosis and to evaluate the effectiveness of STP on prevention of tuberculosis among HIV infected patients. Methodology This study was conducted on 60patients of either gender,aged20-60 years, diagnosed with HIV infection. Demographic data and medical history were collected. Data related to knowledge of patients regarding tuberculosis and treatment was collected before STP (pre-test/O1). This was followed by health education intervention regarding tuberculosis using STP. After STP intervention the knowledge of patients regarding tuberculosis and treatment was again collected after STP (post-test/O2). Knowledge was assessed by frequencies of “poor”, “average” and “good” scores in pre and post-tests. Statistical analysis was performed by using R software (Version 3.6.0). Results Majority of patients were middle aged (48%) with female predominance (Male: Female=0.5: 1.43). Most of the patients were Hindu (88%) with primary education (35%) and monthly income < Rs. 3000 (50%).The gain in knowledge score due to effectiveness of STP on TB (treatment and prevention) post-test was statistically significant (P <0.0001) as compared to pre-test. The knowledge level scores (pre-test and post-test) were dependent on the structured teaching program (STP) (P= 0.034). No significant association was observed between knowledge regarding Tuberculosis and its treatment post-test and socio-demographic variables (P >0.05) except age (P<0.05). Conclusion STP was effective in improving the level of knowledge on prevention of tuberculosis among HIV infected patients.
