Background: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related syndrome that contributes to maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Early identification of the predisposing risk factors at an initial stage of pregnancy will reduce the maternal and fetal morbidities.
Aim: To identify the risk factors associated with preeclampsia and correlate them with maternal and fetal outcomes.
Materials and Method: This prospective case-control study was carried out on 150 (cases=61, controls=88) primipara mothers by using purposive sampling technique. Personal interviews with the participants who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were conducted using a pre-validated structured questionnaire as a data recording tool. The data was analyzed statistically using R statistical software (version 3.6.1).Chi-square test was used to determine the association of risk factors with preeclampsia.
Results: History of hypertension (HTN) in blood relatives (p<0.0001), lifestyle (p=0.001), antenatal exercise (p=0.05), dietary pattern (p=0.002), BMI (p=0.003), and medical history of mothers (p<0.0001) are the important risk factors for preeclampsia. They were also significantly associated with the type of delivery. The fetal outcome was significantly associated with history of hypertension in blood relatives (p<0.0004); maternal lifestyle(p<0.004),dietary pattern(p<0.02),BMI(p<0.014),and medical history(p<0.0004).
Conclusion: Development of preeclampsia was associated with family history of hypertension, BMI, and dietary and lifestyle habits during pregnancy. The same were also associated significantly with specific maternal and fetal outcomes in the given population.
