Background: Battery manufacturing workers (BMW) silver jewellery manufacturing workers (SJMW), , and other automobile workers are exposed to toxic metals during the manufacturing process. Hence, accumulation of lead might occur due to occupational exposure to heavy metals which could cause severe health complications by altering biochemical parameters. The objective of this study was to assess the lead accumulation and lipid profile in blood samples of BMW, SJMW, and spray painters.
Methodology: This observational study was conducted in Western Maharashtra and included 176 subjects (126 lead-exposed workers [LEW]; 42 from each group BMW, SJMW, and spray painters) and 50 controls (healthy lead-unexposed subjects). Demographic data was collected, and blood lead estimation and lipid profile were performed and recorded. SPSS 20.0 was used to analyze the data, and study groups were compared by independent t-test.
Results: The blood lead levels were significantly high in LEW groups than the control group (P<0.001). It was high in BMW (72.64 ? 18.8 ?g/dL) when compared to other groups. Similarly, the triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein levels were high in all three groups (P<0.01). The highest triglyceride level was observed in SJMW (220.00 ± 75.40 mg/dL).
Conclusion: This study evidenced increased blood lead levels and altered lipid parameters in LEW of Western Maharashtra, indicating considerable lead-induced health hazards to lead-exposed workers. Thus, this study advises LEWs to take precautionary measures at work.
