Aim/Objectives: The aimed to correlate the presence of metabolic syndrome in patients with cholecystitis by studying the risk factors. To correlate the demographic data, medical history, physical examination, ultrasonography findings, lipid profiles and fasting blood glucose levels with occurrence of metabolic syndrome.
Methods: This prospective study was carried out for 18 months and included 190 cholecystitis patients who were admitted in our tertiary care hospital. Demographic data and medical history were recorded, and physical examination was conducted. Ultrasonography was performed to confirm the presence of gallstones, and lipid profiles and fasting blood glucose levels were measured. Based on set criteria, the presence of metabolic syndrome was assessed. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data.
Results: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome among cholelithiasis patients was 41.6%. Gender, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, increased waist circumference, elevated serum triglyceride, and reduced high-density lipoprotein showed significant association with metabolic syndrome (P<0.001). The odds of having metabolic syndrome was 29.79 times more in patients with diabetes mellitus, 14.12 times more with hypertension, and 29.55 times more with elevated serum triglyceride than in healthy subjects.
Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and elevated serum triglyceride appeared to be significantly associated with metabolic syndrome in patients diagnosed with GD.
