Background: The association between microalbuminuria and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients suffering from type 1 diabetes is vastly reported. However, for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), the data from epidemiological studies is relatively less. Our study focused on estimating the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in newly diagnosed T2DM patients. Additionally, our study also aimed at ascertaining the correlation of diabetic retinopathy with albuminuria.
Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 80 patients from Dec 2017 to May 2019 at a tertiary care center in India. Demographic data were collected. Clinical investigations including levels of blood sugar (fasting, postprandial, and random), glucose-bound glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), blood urea, serum creatinine, albuminuria and fundoscopy examination for retinopathy were performed. SPSS software (v.20.0.0) was used to perform statistical analysis of all the study data.
Results: The prevalence of DR and microalbuminuria was 8.75% (7/80) and 13.75% (11/80), respectively, and the correlation between them was significant (P<0.0001). A significant difference was noted in retinopathy and non-retinopathy patients with regard to random blood sugar (P=0.04) and HbA1c (P<0.001) levels, with high HbA1c levels in retinopathy patients (13.04±3.00%). With respect to age, gender, and body mass index (BMI), and blood urea and serum creatinine levels, no significant difference was found between retinopathy and non-retinopathy patients (P>0.05).
Conclusion: This study recorded a convincing link between albuminuria (microalbuminuria) and diabetic retinopathy.
