Author: GHAYATHRI KUMARAN, JAYANTH KUMAR VADIVEL
Abstract: Most of the pregnant women visit the dental clinics with a chief complaint of pain due to infections associated with their teeth. These patients definitely need dental treatment and in most of the cases, radiography will be required to proceed the treatment. Dentists will prefer to be on the safer side as they will postpone the dental treatments to the period after delivery. This situation arises as the dentist lack knowledge of the low doses involved in diagnostic dental radiation. An adverse effect can happen to the mother and foetus if the treatment is delayed. Biologically, the response or impact to radiation occurs during the first two weeks of pregnancy. The aim of this study is to determine the understanding regarding dental radiographs towards pregnant women among dental students in Chennai. The purpose of this study is to create awareness and determine the understanding of dental radiographs towards pregnant women among dental students in Chennai. This study was conducted based on a questionnaire which consists of 10 questions through a web-linked application called Survey Monkey. A convenient sample size of 100 consecutive dental students from Chennai participated in the study. As an overall result, the majority of the participants are not aware of dental radiographs towards pregnant women. As a conclusion, the majority of the dental students within the study were not aware of this topic. However, this study was limited to only a few dental institutes in Chennai and only 100 participants.
