Author: JOSEPH ABRAHAM, SRIRENGALAKSHMI M, SHREYA KISHORE, SUBASHREE RATHI
Abstract: Patients have various expectations from orthodontic treatment such as the reduced duration, pain, smile, tooth alignment etc.The issue is further complicated in adolescence when the patient is undergoing major changes and it is difficult to find those changes due to orthodontic treatment. This study was done in a questionnaire format to get a clear picture of the patient’s expectation from orthodontic treatment and also to evaluate the satisfaction of the patient’s facial and dental appearances. The questionnaire was constructed in the Yes / No format regarding their expectations of their initial appointment, type of treatment expected, problems associated with the treatment, duration. The printed questionnaire was distributed to 100 subjects within the age range of 12-25 years old. Results of the study report that 66% expected orthodontic treatment to straighten their teeth, and 73% expected the treatment to produce an improvement in their smile along with giving them confidence socially. 40% of the subjects expected a detailed explanation of the treatment plan in their first appointment. Among the respondents 65% were concerned about the surrounding population’s reaction to them wearing braces and 50% of the subjects expected the treatment to last for a year while 50% expected a regular checkup of once in 3 months.
