Oral health has a major impact on one’s quality of life. Since the last few decades, there is an increase in the prevalence of dental afflictions which can be avoided by the knowledge of simple preventive measures. In this day and age, the world being so fast paced, it is vital that children are imbibed with certain qualities that will benefit their health and sustenance. The first to achieve this is through home learning, therefore proving that the parent must be educated as well. This was a cross sectional study conducted among a sample size of 110 children within the age group of 5-12, in Chennai and their parents. Out of the 110 children, there were 70 female children and 40 male children who were assessed based on a questionnaire developed by the WHO in 2004, for the oral health awareness among school children. In Total, 75 (68.18%) children were of age group 5–10 years, while 35 (31.81%) children were of age group 11–15 years. . Children with parents who lack education regarding oral health maintenance have often experienced toothache, brushes once a day and frequently visit the dentist for toothache compared to children of parents who are aware of the importance of maintenance of oral hygiene and the methods of maintenance. It was inferred from this study that, the education level and awareness of parents regarding oral hygiene maintenance and preventive measures play a key role in determining the oral health of children.
