Hand hygiene (with soap and water or use of an alcohol-based hand rub) has long been considered one of the most important infection control measures to prevent health care associated infections. So the current study was aimed at evaluating the knowledge, attitude and practice towards hand hygiene among dental practitioners in chennai. Data collection was scheduled for a period of 30 days. Among the 190 dental practitioners, 28 (14.7%) had excellent knowledge towards hand hygiene. Among the study subjects having < 5 years of clinical experience, the hand hygiene practices of 42 (71.2%) were excellent. Among the study subjects having 5 – 10 years of clinical experience, the hand hygiene practices of 25 (30.5%) were good and 55 (67.1%) were excellent. Among the study subjects having > 10 years of clinical experience, the hand hygiene practices of 27 (55.1%) were excellent. The association between clinical experience and hand hygiene practice was not significant statistically. These findings are not consistent with the theories of social behaviour, that suggest that people are more likely to perform certain behaviour when they feel there are benefits associated with them and they feel competent with respect to them.
