Awareness On Oral Hemangioma Among Dental Students- A Kap Survey

Author: VARUSHA CHRISTOPHER, DHANRAJ GANAPATHY, SUBHASHREE R, RAKSHAGAN V
Abstract: Vascular lesions are the most common congenital abnormality. The term “hemangioma” generally covers a series of hereditary vascular abnormalities. Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors. The most common sites for their incidence are the head and neck. They are more common in women than men . About 60% of hemangioma is located in the head and neck. The aim of the study was to find out the knowledge, awareness and treatment methods of oral hemangioma among dental students. A questionnaire containing 10 questions were prepared and circulated among dental students included first year, second year, third year, final year and interns of various colleges in Chennai and Coimbatore. The questions were circulated using google forms. The survey was closed after reaching 100 responses from students. The results were then collected and then analysed. 34% knew hemangioma was a developmental vascular abnormality, 45% wasn’t sure and 21% said no .39% knew that hemangiomas mostly occur in the oral cavity, 45% didn’t know and 16% wasn’t sure. This shows that awareness about oral hemangiomas are less among dental students, hence more knowledge regarding oral hemangiomas must be inculcated in the syllabus. This will help in clinically diagnosing and understanding the depth of the subject.
