Cord blood cells are too valuable to discard. Stem cells have been used in treatment for over 2 decades and the list of diseases treated with cord blood has doubled. This study can be used in the development of public cord blood banks in Chennai. The list of clinics and hospitals in Chennai was obtained and using convenient sampling three hospitals were selected. Equal representations from all three hospitals were taken till the sample size was met. A Self-administered questionnaire was distributed to the pregnant women. 340 pregnant women received the questionnaire. 88.8% had little or very little knowledge about stem cells and cord blood. 29.1% of women had a misconception that the surgical procedure of collecting cord blood cells might harm them or their infant. 85.6% of women said that they would be willing to know more information about cord blood banking. It can be concluded that pregnant women lack sufficient knowledge but there is a positive attitude, regarding the cord blood banking and donation. It also stresses that health care professionals play a vital role in providing the required information to their patients at the right time.
