Augmented Reality: A Current Breakthrough In Dentistry - A Review

Author: MULUMOODI SOWMYA, AJITHA.P, S.PRADEEP
Abstract: Augmented reality offers implicit information in addition to that of the real environment and hence opens windows to new possibilities in several fields. Augmented reality has its applications in the medical field, mainly in various surgery types, such as, neurosurgery, laparoscopic surgery and plastic surgery. In dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is the main field where augmented reality is concentrated widely. Recently, augmented reality is enabling new applications in Conservative dentistry, Orthodontics and Endodontics(1) This review briefly summarizes the features of augmented reality technologies, its applications in the field of dentistry and future perspectives. Augmented reality is a subset of Virtual reality. Virtual reality tries to simulate the real environment whereas in augmented reality, the sensory perception is augmented and the real environment is replicated in the virtual world. Hence a virtual space is created around the user’s eye to replace the real world space. The aim of this study is to provide an overview about augmented reality in dentistry; its applications in various fields of dentistry and in dental education. A literature search was performed using the terms “Augmented reality” and “Virtual Reality.” The review recommended the use of both virtual and augmented reality in the field of dental education and also as an aid in dental surgeries/other treatments, as this offers several advantages such as reinforcement of knowledge regarding dentistry, correct use of dental equipment and instruments, enables precise treatment and also ergonomic positioning. It can be concluded that the latest technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality can change the dynamics of teaching methodology of dental education and also helps augment the way of treatment approach.
